Tour to Barcombe
The first tour of 2006 took place on Wednesday 15th February.
Charlie Brown had seen an ad for a pub in Barcombe, so this is where we were headed.
In addition to Dennis and Cynthia, John Hudson, Charlie Brown and Stan were on board
As usual it was a scenic route which took us through Burgess Hill, Ditchling Common, Ditchling, over Ditchling Beacon, a short drive on the A27 and off to Falmer and Woodingdean down to Rottingdean on the South coast.
From Rottingean we followed the coast through Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven to Newhaven and
from Newhaven we followed the A26 northwards joining the A27 again, through Cuilfail Tunnel to Lewes, west from Lewes on the Uckfield road turning off after a couple of miles into Barcombe, through Barcombe and on until we reached Barcombe Village and eventually picked up a sign for the Anchor Inn.
This led down Boast Road where a sign pointed us into Anchor Lane, which was indeed a lane, getting narrower and narrower but which finally ended up at the "Anchor Inn", right on the river Ouse
The Anchor Inn proved to be a very good choice for drinks and lunch. The meals were excellent as were the surroundings, such that this place has been earmarked for a return visit later in the year when we could enjoy the local scenery, especially the river Ouse.
The return trip took us back along the track and into country roads to Chailey, then Haywards Heath and Balcombe and eventually to the Greyhound at Tinsley Green for several unwinding drinks.
The weather was bright and dry, springlike, for the whole day. All in all a very pleasant round trip of some 80 miles.
